January Artist Feature- Mary Helen Robert

Mary Helen Robert, a native of Chattanooga, TN designs and creates one-of-a-kind wearable art that is founded on organic and sculptural designs. From an early age she exercised a creative urge, making sculptures out of her natural surroundings-an influence visible in her work today. She uses varied techniques and materials including tradtional metalsmithing with sterling silver, fine silver, nickel, copper, brass, and aluminum.

"I have always been an artist - being creative and expressing myself through art is at the core of who I am." Growing up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains she developed a close connection to nature. This has resulted in her incorporation of various elements of nature in her designs by creating unique symbols of the natural world.

Other artistic influences include her degree in Anthropology and her fascination with other cultures. She creates univeral cultural symbols in her jewelry-such as circles and swirls symbolizing life and continuity. "Exposure to other cultures is reflected in my creative process, resulting in a wide range of design and execution."

For Mary Robert, it is the process of creating jewelry with her hands that enriches her life on a day to day basis. "Making art is fundamental to who I am and what I am meant to do."
